Portugal reaches the quarter-finals of the European Football Championship

Long harmlessness ended at the last moment

Conceição seals victory shortly before the end

Lisbon - Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has reached the quarter-finals of the European Football Championship with Portugal. Against Slovenia, the Iberians prevailed 1-0 (0-0) in Seville and thus secured a place in the last eight of the tournament. Francisco Conceição scored the winning goal in the 89th minute.

Portugal initially struggled against the outsiders and hardly posed a threat to the Slovenian goal. Only shortly before the break did the Seleção become more dangerous. In the 42nd minute, Ronaldo just missed the lead with a header from close range. After the change, the picture hardly changed. Portugal dominated, but lacked the necessary ideas in their attacking game. Slovenia stayed compact and waited for their chances to counterattack.

When it looked like it was going to be a goalless draw, Conceição struck. The winger took advantage of a mistake in the Slovenian defense and chipped the ball over goalkeeper Jan Oblak into the net.

In the quarter-finals, Portugal will now face France, who beat Switzerland 3-1 in the last 16.

Conclusion: Portugal's victory over Slovenia was a hard-fought one. The Iberians had to be patient and wait for their chances. In the end, Conceição's late goal was enough to book a place in the quarter-finals. Ronaldo and his team-mates can now look forward to a clash with France, who are one of the favourites for the title.
