Labour's Brexit Slogan: Make Brexit Work
Labour Insiders Say Two Schools of Thought Inside Starmer Camp on Brexit
Labour Determined to Turn Page on Brexit, Rules Out Rejoining EU Single Market or Customs Union
Sir Keir Starmer will pursue an ambitious twin-track strategy to build closer UK trade and security ties with the EU if his party wins the next general election. Labour insiders say there are two schools of thought inside the Starmer camp on Brexit. One view is that Labour should focus on making the current Brexit deal work, while the other view is that Labour should seek a better deal with the EU. Labour has ruled out rejoining the EU single market or customs union, but it says it is still open to negotiating changes to the Northern Ireland protocol. The Northern Ireland protocol is part of the Brexit deal that was agreed between the UK and EU in 2019. It is designed to avoid a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. However, the protocol has been controversial, and the UK government has said it wants to change it. The EU has said it is willing to discuss changes to the protocol, but it has also said that it will not renegotiate the overall Brexit deal.
