Swimmer killed in Sydney shark attack
First fatal incident since 1963
A swimmer has been killed after sustaining catastrophic injuries in the first fatal shark attack in Sydney since 1963, Australian officials say.
The 43-year-old swimmer was attacked at Little Bay Beach in the city's south-east just after 4.30pm on Wednesday.
Witnesses reported seeing a large shark attack the man, who was swimming about 150m from the shore.
Police have not yet formally identified the victim, but a friend confirmed to the ABC that Simon Nellist died in the attack.
Nellist's family has not yet been informed of his death.
Four ambulances and a rescue helicopter were called to the scene, but the man could not be saved.
The attack is the first fatal shark attack at a Sydney beach in almost 60 years.
Experts say fatal shark attacks in Sydney are rare and uncommon.
In 1963, a 15-year-old boy was killed by a shark at Coogee Beach.
The last fatal shark attack in New South Wales was in 2015, when a 57-year-old surfer was killed at Ballina.
