A History of Defensive Design
The Castello, a magnificent fortification with a rich history, boasts two distinct moats that played a crucial role in its defense. These impressive barriers, known as the Cortile delle Armi and the Corte Ducale, served as formidable obstacles for potential attackers, enhancing the castle's impenetrability.
The Cortile delle Armi Moat
Separating the Cortile delle Armi from the Corte Ducale, the first moat acted as a primary line of defense. Its wide expanse and steep sides made it difficult for enemies to cross, forcing them to find alternative routes. The moat's depth also prevented attackers from using scaling ladders to gain access to the castle walls.
The Corte Ducale Moat
The second moat, surrounding the Corte Ducale, offered an additional layer of protection. It was designed to be narrower than the first moat, making it even more difficult to cross. By creating multiple obstacles, the castle's defenders could slow down attackers, giving them time to prepare for an assault.
